Position Summary

This position is responsible for supporting SEC filings including 8-K, 10-Q, and 10-K, and the accounting for clinical trials. Also responsible for other month-end close activities and providing support for external audits and SOX 404 activities. The position interfaces with all levels of management within the organization, as well as representing the Company to individuals outside of the organization, primarily external auditors.

Essential Functions

  • Assist in the preparation of SEC filings including 8-K, 10-Q, 10-K, and 14A.
  • Participate and assist in the facilitation of quarterly reviews and annual audit.
  • Compile and maintain all documentation to support the disclosures in SEC filings.
  • Prepare XBRL exhibits to Forms 10-Q and 10-K
  • Ensure maintenance of internal controls over the financial reporting process, including disciplined and high-quality documentation and tie-outs.
  • Maintain Sarbanes-Oxley internal control narratives and testing documentation for all Company processes.
  • Manage and coordinate SOX testing with internal and external auditors.
  • Preparing whitepapers on impact of new technical literature applicable to the Company.
  • Responsible for the accounting for clinical trial costs. Perform contract accrual tracking monthly and record journal entries during the close process.
  • Review all Company contracts for initial accounting implications
  • Review new clinical trial contracts for accounting implications and support analysis and negotiation of terms prior to contract execution.
  • Ensure vendor invoices for Clinical studies align to contract and negotiated budgets. Liaise with vendors to request corrected invoices and communicate all invoice discrepancies to accounts payable.
  • Collaborate with FP&A team as liaison to the clinical department for all financial aspects of the clinical trials.
  • Track and monitor total spend per contract and ensure alignment with signed clinical agreements.
  • Complete various month-end journal entries and general accounting activities as part of the month-end close, including management of monthly close timing.
  • Assist in establishment of financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems.
  • Stay abreast of SEC and FASB guidance and pronouncements.
  • Assist with ad hoc projects and prepare responses to various requests for information.

Supervisory Responsibilities                                                    
Hire, lead, and develop Accounting staff members.


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance/Accounting or related discipline, and 5+ years related experience, including 3+ years in a public accounting firm.  CPA/CMA certification required.
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and ability to quickly and correctly analyze financial transactions to determine the best course of action for the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of internal accounting and operating controls.
  • Demonstrated experience developing accounting organization strategies

Knowledge and Competencies

  • Solid understanding of GAAP
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated strong critical thinking and analytical skills with the ability to synthesize complex or diverse information from data, polices, procedures and/or regulations, identify accounting issues and solution alternatives, and design and implement treatment, workflows and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to approach others in a tactful manner; focus on resolving issues; maintain confidentiality, effectively influence others to effect changes, and present ideas/recommendations clearly and concisely
  • Detail oriented with high degree of accuracy.
  • Strong contributor in a team environment, with the ability to balances team and individual viewpoints and responsibilities.
  • Ability to prioritize and plan work activities to successfully meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt and work in a quickly changing environment, managing competing demands, and changing approaches or method to best fit the situation.
