Summary of Role:

The Director of Accounting will oversee all international accounting, lead systems implementations and enhancements to align with the company’s strategic goals, oversee all external financial statement audits, reporting and internal control (SOX) domestically and internationally. The position will promote quality and integrity of the accounting output by effectively managing all aspects of the corporation’s general accounting processes through effective communication and a positive customer service attitude. This includes building/maintaining a cohesive and effective staff; day-to-day management of departmental staff; modifying and maintaining policies; continually seeking mechanisms to streamline and automate processes; and building and maintaining relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. This role will report to VP, Corporate Controller.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Management of day-to-day general accounting of the company and subsidiaries
  • Interpret and apply GAAP and other authoritative accounting standards
  • Oversee month-end, quarter-end and year-end close process to ensure accuracy and integrity of internal and external financial reporting
  • Lead the strategic selection, implementation and/or upgrades of systems and/or ERP modules required as part of the company’s strategic global expansion
  • Support the resolution of complex technical accounting issues timely and effectively
  • Oversee accurate and timely preparation of account reconciliations and other support as required by Sarbanes Oxley and corporate policies
  • Partner with external auditors, as needed, on highly complex business transactions to ensure accounting issues are properly vetted and concluded.
  • Assist with reviewing external financial statements including footnote disclosure of accounting transactions
  • Provide oversight of equity accounting and payroll
  • Initiate, review, and implement process improvements of general accounting to increase operational efficiencies while maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the underlying accounting records
  • Support internal financial reporting and financial analysis
  • Guide, mentor and manage a team of accountants
  • Maintain internal control environment to ensure compliance with Sox and corporate policies and procedures for general accounting operations
  • Participate in or lead ad hoc projects, as needed
  • Assist Controller in making process and systems improvements in any accounting related areas
  • Responsible for ensuring that department understands and complies with quality standards and requirements as documented.
  • All other duties as assigned or necessary

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of industry experience in accounting roles with increasing responsibilities, preferably in biotech; and 5+ years of successful management experience; or an equivalent combination.
  • Prior experience leading both technical accounting and SEC reporting at a public company.
  • Previous experience as accounting director in a global commercial stage biotech environment or life sciences experience, preferred
  • Strong operational and technical accounting background
  • Dynamics 365/NAV ERP system experience preferred
  • SOX experience required; CPA and public company experience highly preferred
  • Strong technical and research background around US GAAP
  • Ability to work effectively with senior level executives and external advisors
  • Extensive project management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of mental effort – nearly all duties performed under tight deadlines and under the scrutiny of corporate stakeholders
  • Ability to plan, manage, and complete regular and special projects associated with general ledger and account reconciliation responsibilities. Must be able to analyze accounting processes, procedures and controls and suggest and implement improvements.
  • Ability to construct financial & other reporting models to assess and report performance.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university in accounting or related field
