Summary of Role:
We are seeking a Senior Manager to own financial planning & analysis (FP&A) and improve cost accounting processes. This role will report to the Corporate Controller. A successful candidate will have an enthusiastic entrepreneurial work ethic. This person will work closely with department heads, operations, IT, and other members of the finance team.

The candidate will play a key role in the development, implementation and maintenance of labor and overhead allocation, product and inventory accounting, cost analysis, while partnering with other key functional areas such as Operations and Sales to implement new processes as the Company expands commercialization.  The ideal candidate has proven operational experience from companies with commercial product(s) within the biotech or related industries.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

FP&A

  • Develop, plan, and coordinate annual budgets and provide timely reporting and variance analyses
  • Own the Forecast and provide accurate and current predictions of revenue, net income and cash
  • Prepare the monthly business reviews for senior leadership
  • Identify and implement process development and improvement relating to budgeting, forecasting, period close process, ERP implementation, and financial reporting  
  • Produce robust, proactive financial analysis for business partners

Cost Accounting

  • Lead the development of costing method/process for new products and for labor and overhead allocation, ensure compliance with applicable accounting guidance (IFRS)
  • Drive and maintain establishment of bill of material, product routings, material, labor and overhead costs
  • Plan, collect, and analyze data to drive the standard cost revaluation processes; implement cost update periodically
  • Manage costing process, establish standard costs for new inventory items and update standard cost as appropriate
  • Participate in all financial cycle close, prepare journal entries related to cost allocation, inventory adjustments, and reserves analysis, analyze and reconcile key inventory related accounts
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly reporting related to costing and inventory
  • Prepare COGS calculations and analysis as needed
  • Report and analyze cost variances to the standard, help identify cost saving opportunities
  • Coordinates inventory related activities including cycle count and physical inventory.
  • Assist in developing processes and utilizing systems enhancements to ensure inventory control and the accuracy of inventory data.
  • Ensure internal controls related to inventory costing process are in compliance
  • Analyze Financials and compare to budget, contracts, and work orders to improve Accounting, forecasting and business decisions.
  • Update budgets, forecasts and provide budget vs actual analysis for areas of responsibility
  • Collaborate with department heads to gain an understanding of the business to ensure proper forecasting
  • Support internal and external audit requirements related to specific areas of responsibilities and prepare supporting documentation for SEC filings as needed.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of corporate accounting policies and procedures and assist in SOX implementation
  • All other duties as assigned or necessary

Required Qualifications:

  • 8-10 years of overall accounting experience with at least 5 years of cost accounting/FP&A experience either at a life science or manufacturing firm
  • A thorough understanding of GAAP, Manufacturing costs, variances, BOM’s and work orders
  • An ability to organize, create and achieve buy in for an annual Budget.
  • An ability to partner with Dept Heads while reporting on them
  • Be able to turn financial data into actionable plans
  • Highly proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel (including the ability to perform pivot tables and complex functions and formulas, such as SUMIF and VLOOKUP)
  • Experience with audits and SOX
  • Able Thrive in a fast changing, start-up company, environment
  • Excellent Communication skills with word, writing and excel
  • Ability to proactively identify and solve problems.
  • Outstanding integrity, accuracy and organizational skills.
  • The ability to execute on your goals with little training or input.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A CPA or CMA
  • Computer skills: Functional experience with an ERP, Microsoft Business central/NAV preferred
  • Experience in ERP implementations
  • Experience with FP&A, SEC reporting and/or GL accounting
  • Experience with setting up initial accounting systems
  • Experience with consolidations
  • Accounting experience at public companies

Education Requirements:

  • MBA or Masters in Accounting

Working Conditions:

  • Under standard working conditions, this position is based in our San Diego, CA office. Due to COVID-19, remote work locations will be considered temporarily, but must be in proximity to access or travel to the San Diego, CA office as the business may require
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds required
