New ABFO Member Open Job Posting, Senior Director, Accounting, Arena Pharmaceuticals

Overview

The Senior Director, Accounting will oversee external reporting, SOX and international accounting related functions to. The primary focus of the role is to maintain effective accounting and SEC reporting, oversee the accurate and timely closing of the international consolidation process and the successful completion of external audits. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the company’s external SEC filings, including the company’s 10-K, 10-Q and certain 8-K filings. Collaborate with the Legal department on periodic and other filings, as needed.
  • Manage company’s external auditors during the quarterly reviews and annual audit
  • Work closely with the VP, Corporate Controller to expand the international accounting function in accordance with the company’s international strategic plan, while improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the company’s accounting systems, internal controls, and internal and external reporting
  • Oversee the international consolidation process by working closely with international accounting leads and the US Director of Accounting
  • Manage the internal control (SOX) functions, including the maintenance of the company’s internal control documentation
  • Lead the implementation and/or upgrades of complex ERP modules required as part of the company’s strategic global expansion (inventory costing modules, sales modules, upgrades to consolidation module, etc.)
  • Research and complete memoranda or other documentation on technical accounting issues including implementation of new accounting pronouncements  
  • Responsible for complex technical areas such as equity compensation and revenue recognition
  • Back-up reviewer of clinical accruals and other areas as needed
  • Assist with the compliance of local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings as needed
  • Coordinate and perform special projects as needed and perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year College or university; CPA required, MBA preferred
  • 8+ years of experience in senior level accounting and finance positions, with a minimum of 2 years of experience with a publicly traded company
  • Previous experience as accounting director in a global commercial stage biotech environment or life sciences experience, preferred
  • Strong operational and technical accounting background
  • Experience with preparing SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q, etc.) and XBRL review
  • Dynamics 365, Dynamics AX, GP Dynamics ERP system experience preferred
  • Equity Edge or comparable stock administration system experience preferred
  • Strong written communication; presents numerical data effectively
  • Ability to respond to rapidly changing and conflicting priorities.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, cost control principles
  • Strong analytical ability
  • Work well with various teams to accomplish company goals
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Exhibits strong problem solving and judgment skills
  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite
