Payroll Manager

The Position:

Arrowhead seeks a Payroll Manager to join its Accounting Team, and this individual will report into Arrowhead’s Senior Accounting Manager.  This individual will be responsible for managing Arrowhead’s biweekly payroll processing for its 2 sites (Pasadena, CA ~ 40 employees, and Madison, WI ~ 110 employees).  This individual will also be responsible for managing the input and accuracy of equity compensation (stock option and restricted stock unit activity) into Arrowhead’s payroll processing cycle.  The individual will work closely with members of the Accounting Team, and the Human Resources Team.


  • Process biweekly payroll for exempt and non-exempt employees, and validate payroll taxes deducted, paycheck amounts, contract terms, adjustments, changes, etc.
  • Oversee processing of payroll changes (i.e. new hires, terminations, raises) and systems upgrades.
  • Document, review and validate accuracy of equity compensation transactions reported between ADP and Arrowhead’s equity compensation system. 
  • Document guidelines and procedures to ensure all federal, state, local, and other applicable compliance requirements are met
  • Stay abreast of latest changes relating to payroll compliance that may impact Arrowhead as it rapidly grows (develops a sales force, etc.)
  • Improve and standardize employee usage of ADP’s Time and Attendance module across both sites
  • Prepare and reconcile year end W-2 and 3921 forms to employees, 1099 forms to required vendors
  • Facilitate the transmission of 401k and other contributions
  • Assist in driving the annual 401k and benefit plan audits toward completion
  • Team with Human Resources to help resolve payroll issues, answer questions, set up new or changing features etc.
  • Prepare financial reports for accounting and auditing purposes, and for management review
  • Prepare payroll journal entries and reconcile payroll reports to general ledger
  • Other related duties, as assigned.


  • 5-7 years of payroll experience in a multi-state company
  • Experience with ADP
  • Proficient knowledge of compliance in labor and tax laws related to payroll
  • Bachelor’s or Masters’ degree, preferably in Finance/Accounting;
  • Ability to gather, analyze and interpret information for completeness and accuracy; excellent attention to detail; excellent organizational skills;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel – pivot tables, vlookups, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills (oral & written); ability to effectively interact with others at all levels – within and outside of finance.
  • Demonstrated history of identifying problems, researching and recommending resolutions
  • Flexibility to put in extra hours during critical times such as month, quarter and year-end close cycles
  • Strong time management with the ability to work independently and in a group setting


  • CPP Certification
  • Life science or healthcare education
