Position Summary: 

Retrophin, Inc. is hiring a full time Senior Manager/Associate Director of Technical Accounting & SEC Reporting to support the finance department at a dynamic biotech organization. This position will work across the organization and is responsible for providing oral and written communication with internal stakeholders and external auditors on technical accounting matters, financial reporting, and accounting policies. As the subject matter expert on all technical accounting topics, the individual in this role will be responsible for research, documentation, implementation of FASB pronouncements as well as working on external financial reporting to support our SEC filings. This position will partner with finance and non-finance key stakeholders on monthly and quarterly financial reporting and close activities, as well as supporting decision support analyses and other ad-hoc projects.

The successful candidate must have experience working at a public company, implementing recent/new FASB accounting standards, establishing and complying with SOX controls, and performing contract reviews and developing contract summaries and white papers.

Here's what you’ll do:

  • Analyze and document non-recurring transactions by properly identifying accounting implications of various explicit terms and implied nuances, applying appropriate accounting rules and literature and exercising judgment in subjective areas to draw reasonable and acceptable conclusion.
  • Manage external vendors to support valuations, software contacts, and outsourced technical accounting projects.
  • Responsible for technical accounting research. Review, interpret and opine on diverse contracts and agreements to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures, GAAP, Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and other regulatory requirements. Ensure clear and concise written documentation of accounting conclusions and accounting policies.
  • Interact extensively with external auditors.
  • Lead or assist in new accounting standard adoption and process implementation. Build and strengthen working relationships and scale with the growth of business teams to ensure successful integration with various business functions.
  • Lead or assist in quarterly and annual external financial reporting, including Forms 10-Qs ,10-Ks and 8-Ks tie-out documentation.
  • Responsible for the creating and maintaining accounting summaries for key and complex contracts.
  • Review monthly subsidiary financial statements; reconcile intercompany balances; manage cost sharing allocations and related invoicing; preparation of subsidiary support schedules and special projects related to subsidiaries as needed.
  • Execute the month-end close process by consolidating international entities, preparing, reviewing and posting general ledger journal entries, reconciling select balance sheet and P&L accounts, and performing monthly analytical reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with the SOX controls applicable to areas of responsibility.
  • Provide accounting support for special projects and ad-hoc reporting and analysis as necessary.

Here’s what you’ll bring to the table

  • Self-starter/proactive and willingness to take on and learn new skills
  • Bachelor's degree required, accounting concentration preferred
  • CPA required
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in a public accounting firm
  • Big 4 or 2nd tier public accounting experience is highly preferred
  • Pharma/Biotech experience is a plus but not required
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP and experience with complex accounting issues and technical accounting research
  • SEC reporting experience is a plus, and working knowledge of SOX internal controls
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong team player and collaborator within finance and across functional team.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Advanced excel skills. High proficiency in Word and PowerPoint
  • Proactive, responsive and timely problem solver with outstanding project management skills, pays attention to detail, drives processes and meets deadlines
  • Prior experience working with tight deadlines and demonstrated responsibility for accuracy and timeliness for work performed.
