Accounting Manager

Job Summary:

The Accounting Manager will lead all day-to-day operations of the accounting department while ensuring compliance with GAAP and other applicable standards, rules, and regulations. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, quarterly review, year-end audit preparation, SOX Compliance and the support of budget and forecast activities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that accounting functions are being performed in accordance with company policy and in accordance with GAAP.
  • Manage the close calendar each period and coordinate deadlines within the department and communicate status to other departments impacted throughout the close cycle.
  • Manage review process of Accounts Payable, Payroll, and journal entries to ensure activity is reasonable, accurate, and appropriately supported.
  • Review the reasonableness of accounting estimates and that the assumptions and sources for those estimates are valid.
  • Manage review of general ledger account reconciliations and ensure understanding, cause, and appropriateness of all reconciling items.
  • Coordinate quarterly compilation and posting of post-close adjustments.
  • Analyze existing processes, work closely with staff, management and cross-functionally to streamline current systems, leverage new finance-related information technology tools, and refine standard operating procedures to provide maximum benefit to the organization.
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are being followed to comply with the requirements of Sarbanes Oxley
  • Develop, communicate, and enforce policies and procedures for required financial processes and prepare records necessary to safeguard assets and provide reliable financial information.
  • Perform review of all financial statements and flux analysis.
  • Assist in the coordination of quarterly reviews and year-end financial audit process performed by external auditors and coordinate preparation and review of audit support.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the guidelines set forth by GAAP and any accounting pronouncements as they apply to the Company.
  • Support the preparation of SEC required public company filings as required.
  • Participate in annual budgeting, forecasting and ongoing reporting of budget to actuals to departmental vice presidents.
  • Administrator of travel and expense management system (Concur).

Competencies:

  • Must have strong experience with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines required.
  • Experience working with Great Plains, Workiva, and Concur is a plus.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring and day-to-day direction for a team of accounting professionals.
  • Promote a positive teamwork environment with increased employee engagement.
  • Provide timely and actionable feedback on individual work performance.
  • Continuously assess the responsibilities and workload of the Accounting team, reallocate resources as needed.
  • Assist in the development of departmental initiatives and goals and the strategies to achieve those initiatives and goals.
  • Participate in the selection, interviewing and hiring of accounting staff.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS/BA) in accounting, finance or business administration is required.
  • Minimum 5 years’ accounting experience required, with two years of supervisory experience in the life sciences industry, including experience with clinical trial accounting and revenue recognition.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully; develop alternative solutions; and meet critical deadlines.
  • Make timely decisions, exhibiting sound and accurate judgment; support and explain reasoning for decisions; include appropriate people in decision-making process.

Travel:

Minimal travel is required of this position.
