New ABFO Member Company Open Job Posting - Imago BioScience, Senior Accountant

About Imago
Imago BioScience is a publicly traded (IMGO) early-stage biotech company dedicated to improving treatments for patients with bone marrow disease, especially the myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs).  Over the past 10 years, we have we discovered a molecule, shepherded it into the clinic and are embarking on the final stages of clinical testing.  Imago has been successful because we are innovative, rooted in science, and supremely focused on improving the way bone marrow diseases are managed.

Developing drugs is hugely challenging.  One has to be optimistic, always practical and totally data-driven, which can mean ignoring conventional wisdom.  Every drug development process has been successful because of persistence, insight, and the ability to take on problems fearlessly.

What’s it like to work at ImagoBio?
Imago is headquartered in South San Francisco, California and we’ve been a virtual company before being a virtual company was something people talked about. Along with a teammate in the UK, our team stretches across the US from the Atlantic to the Pacific and places in between.

That virtual mindset, the fact that several on the team have worked together or knew each other even before Imago was created, and people with a range of backgrounds and places we call “home,” informs how we think and go about our work.

We are still small and nimble (less than 50 people), and as such a team of doers, not simply managers who delegate. That mindset drives a hands-on approach to our work from our CEO to the most junior team member. And while we work independently – remember we’re virtual – we expect team members to help whenever and wherever there’s a need.

At our best, we focus on priorities and solutions, novel or proven. We are problem solvers, not paralyzed by challenges. We trust people to do their jobs and like many teams – think of the Blue Angels flying jet squadron – that trust is earned through dependability, competence, and reliability.

What else is it like to work at Imago?
People are motivated and expected to learn and deliver results. Relevant information is shared broadly; there are few “secrets” to be found and it’s OK to ask questions – again a function of our virtual nature.

Imago people are totally ready to dive into the work without a lot of handholding, have two ears and one mouth (to listen better). It helps if you have considered being a stand-up comic… because you understand the intimacy that humor engenders and the requirement of reading an audience and thinking on your feet. Because we’re a pure virtual company, you need to be able to work remote very effectively

We expect people to focus on solutions, not blame and that those opinions and differences are handled respectfully. People at Imago are direct (it’s the voice of the New Englanders in some of us) and polite (a certain Midwest influence). Voices aren’t raised, disrespectful language (attacking a person rather than the idea) is unwelcomed.

What are we working on honing? Getting better at welcoming new ideas and avoiding, narrow mindedness (“we tried that before”). People proactively asking for feedback. And Iterations that are more thoughtful and routine including premortems, postmortems, etc., and not ad hoc.

It is very much an all for one, one for all company; the proverbial “dump and run” on a teammate is verboten unless mutually agreed. Expectations are high, important milestones are celebrated, and heads down time is built into company operations (e.g., “quiet Fridays” – no reoccurring meetings).
