This position oversees the accounting, finance, treasury and tax functions to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies of a privately held corporation. Work with other senior executives and parent company to establish finance and strategic goals for the organization. Responsibilities include long-range financial planning and policies, financial reporting and accounting policies and procedures. Additionally, this position leads the implementation of the Ethics & Compliance Program and takes local actions to mitigate compliance risks for Alexza or Ferrer.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing all the accounting and financial functions of the organization, including financial reporting, financial planning, accounting policies and procedures, internal control, payroll, treasury, tax, annual audit, and financial compliance.
  • Member of the Alexza executive team responsible for strategic planning and management of the company to ensure resources meet all corporate goals in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Manage purchasing function and related systems.
  • Manage the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements (reporting, reporting controlling and cash flow) to be provided to Ferrer Headquarters.
  • Manage the company’s WeGrow/Beyond Budgeting initiative including preparation and progress against 5-year strategic plan, targets, latest estimate and other financial planning (including NPV analysis) reported to Ferrer Headquarters.
  • Work closely with the COO and FPA manager to provide direct updates, changes and improvements to long-term financial model related to contingent liabilities.
  • Lead financial aspects of partnerships including reviewing invoices for compliance with contract terms, monitoring accounts receivable and supporting royalty revenue reporting when applicable.
  • Overall accountability for year-end audit and tax reporting and filing processes.
  • Develop and maintain commercialization compliance system and policies and procedures and other comprehensive compliance requirements.
  • Develop and implement the approved Ferrer Corporate Ethics & Compliance Program at Alexza. Monitor, update and facilitate training on policies and procedures as required. Responsible for raising awareness and increasing the compliance culture, as well as identifying compliance risks that may cause operational, financial or reputational damage to Alexza or Ferrer. If necessary, and in collaboration with Ferrer Headquarters, represent the Company in front of health and government entities.
  • Direct and manage Alexza 401k Investment Committee, overall responsibility for annual 401k audit and compliance activities.
  • Overall accountability for all insurance matters, including general liability, clinical trial and product liability insurance. Along with Controller, primary interface with insurance brokers.
  • Provide general oversight to the company in contracts, licensing and finance.
  • In collaboration with Controller, manage relationship with various vendors including auditors, outside counsel, insurance brokers, etc.
  • Manage, assess and implement appropriate accounting, purchasing, payroll and other systems.
  • Supervise, develop and train members of accounting staff including controller and FPA manager.
  • Collaborate with Ferrer Headquarters on all accounting, finance and purchasing matters.
  • Perform additional responsibilities for Company, Executive Team, and Ferrer Headquarters, as needed. 

Skills required

  • Proven leadership record in senior financial positions with previous experience in strategic negotiations, strategic planning and analysis and cost controls and pharmaceutical commercialization.
  • Minimum 10 years senior finance experience in the biopharmaceutical industry
  • Experience in high level financial reporting, licensing, and contracts
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment
  • Experience with financial control requirements as required by Sarbanes Oxley (Sox 404)

Education and experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting or Finance. A Masters Degree in Business Administration or CPA is preferred
  • Experienced financial pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical professional with 15+ years of demonstrated experience and proven success
  • Experience in product development/manufacturing process is preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Potentially prolonged periods standing
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Must be able to travel
