Alexza Pharmaceuticals is a technologically advanced, forward-thinking and innovative company based in Mountain View, California. Alexza is focused on the research, development, and commercialization of novel, proprietary products for the acute treatment of medical conditions. Alexza’s products and development pipeline are based on the Staccato® One Breath Technology™ – OBT™ system, a handheld inhaler designed to deliver a pure drug aerosol to the deep lung, providing rapid systemic delivery and therapeutic onset in a simple, non-invasive manner. Alexza is a wholly owned subsidiary of a Ferrer, a Barcelona Spain based private company. The Controller position will direct the accounting and F,P&A functions, maintain fiscal records, establish and manage budgetary controls and procedures, and prepare financial reports.              


  • Develop, interpret, prepare and administer the company policies, procedures and plans relating to all accounting and reporting matters including revenue recognition
  • Manages the accounting systems, including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivables, fixed assets, payroll, cost accounting and inventory accounting
  • Maintain and develop internal control structure including development and revision of accounting policies and procedures
  • Manages Sarbanes Oxley 404 compliance program
  • Research accounting issues and prepares technical accounting memos as needed
  • Assess and implement appropriate accounting systems and process improvements
  • Manages cash forecasting process
  • Reviews and approves weekly vendor payments
  • Supervise, develop and train members of accounting staff including Sr Manager, Accounting and Sr Manager, FP&A
  • Provide oversight for tax reporting and tax return filing processes
  • Manages all insurance matters including general liability, clinical trial and product liability insurance renewals, certificates of insurance and all day to day communications and management of insurance broker. Principle interface with insurance broker
  • Manages relationships with various vendors such as auditors, legal counsel, rights agent
  • Collaborates with HR and SVP, Finance to manage 401k plan. Member of 401k investment committee
  • Collaborates with key members of parent company Finance Team and other teams, as appropriate
  • Performs additional responsibilities for Finance Team, Executive Team and parent company as needed

Skills required

  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to interface with senior management, parent company, auditors and other vendors
  • Strong attention to detail, sense of urgency and confidentiality
  • Advanced Office 365 skills including excellent Excel skills, Word PowerPoint and financial software programs
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment

Education and experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree, CPA preferred, 10 – 12 years of experience, with at least 2 years manager level experience in public accounting firm (Big 4 preferred but not required)
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP (IFRS knowledge helpful) and ability to advise on technical accounting issues
  • Strong understanding of cost accounting preferably in pharmaceutical manufacturing environment
  • Background with life science companies preferred

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Potentially prolonged periods standing
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Must be able to travel
