NGM Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to discovering and developing the next generation of medicines for the treatment of serious diseases.  Our experienced scientific team has joined forces with an impressive group of industry professionals, Nobel Laureates and other distinguished researchers to build a company where innovation and cutting-edge science has provided the foundation for a robust drug discovery engine that has a track record of generating one new IND candidate per year.  NGM’s current pipeline of clinical-stage programs consists of five drug candidates targeting cancer, retinal diseases, and liver and metabolic diseases.  These programs include MK-3655 in a phase 2b clinical study in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver fibrosis stage 2 or 3 (F2/3), being run by our partner, Merck, aldafermin in a Phase 2b clinical study in NASH patients with F4 liver fibrosis and compensated cirrhosis, NGM621 in a Phase 2 study in geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), NGM120 in a Phase 2 study for the treatment of metastatic pancreatic cancer, and NGM707 in a Phase 1/2 study for the treatment of advanced solid tumors. 

The Vice President of Corporate Finance and Investor Relations is responsible for leading NGM’s financial planning and analysis activities at NGM and for creating, planning, and executing NGM's investor relations programs to effectively deliver NGM’s corporate messages to the investment community. This role will partner closely with the CEO, the CFO, other members of the Executive Leadership Team, Corporate Communications, Program Team Leads, Project Management, and Human Resources, and other key stakeholders to ensure consistent and aligned messages that reinforce NGM’s strategy, values, and priorities. The ideal candidate is an experienced finance professional that wants to build at a science-led company, can challenge ideas but be flexible, is proactive, diligent and has high EQ.

The right candidate can set a strategy for investor relations and ensure our financial plans supports maximizing long-term value creation.  For analysts and investors, this role will need to translate and distill complex and cutting-edge science for external consumption.  This person should be viewed as someone who can influence others, drive alignment across diverse cross-functional teams, and execute key deliverables on time and on budget. The VP of Corporate Finance and IR will guide a highly motivated and skilled financial planning & analysis (FP&A) team to help them fulfill their potential both individually and as a team. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a thought partner to the CFO and Executive team on articulating and executing company strategy for delivering shareholder value – both for internal partners to optimize execution and for external parties to understand our direction
  • Responsible for all Corporate Finance, including leading a FP&A team that can support the growing operational demands of NGM as we further build our comprehensive pipeline
  • Use detailed and measured analysis to advise the NGM’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors on expected investment community reaction to various strategic decisions and current market perceptions of the company
  • Own the planning and preparation of Board materials for the FP&A and IR functions
  • Drive the long-term and annual corporate planning and forecasting process, collaborating at all levels of NGM on appropriate targets and developing clear timelines, goals and expectations that link to our corporate goals
  • Be a key partner to corporate communications, business development and program teams to ensure a clear, integrated, single message for NGM communications
  • Monitor industry and competitor developments, alert management and prepare proactive and reactive plans as needed
  • Lead the communications and education of sell-side analyst community, providing clear direction and engaging to develop further relationships
  • Lead the company’s efforts to target, build and cultivate relationships with the buy-side and sell-side community and ensure that NGM’s story is communicated on a continuous and transparent basis that is compliant with corporate policies and securities regulations
  • Maintain a pulse on the industry and evolving competitive landscape for NGM’s development programs to effectively anticipate investor concerns/questions and develop the company’s positioning and messaging
  • Become integrated with the R&D team and have a direct line on scientific progress and clinical updates that will inform investor messaging and planning
  • Lead the coordination of investor conferences, events, and roadshows
  • Owner of our investor relations materials, including relevant press releases and investor presentations, consistently refining, and updating to meet the dynamic nature of our business
  • Serve as the company’s liaison to institutional investors and analysts; provide timely, accurate and consistent responses to inquiries
  • Partner closely with Accounting, Legal and other departments to ensure accurate and appropriate materials for financial reporting, investor roadshows, analyst updates/events, and conferences
  • Demonstrated ability to work across the broader research, clinical development, and operational functions to understand and influence trends and incorporate this understanding into our external communications

Required Experience

  • BA/BS is required; MBA, MD and/or PhD is a plus
  • 10+ years of progressive finance or investor relations experience in a publicly traded company or in finance and investing in the biotech/biopharma industry; public company experience strongly preferred
  • Established relationships and credibility with investors and analysts in the biotech/biopharma industry
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Facile with scientific and technical information and data, with an ability to synthesize and distill complex information into simple, clear messages
  • Strong relationship development and management skills that are demonstrated across executives, scientists, clinicians and the finance/investment community
  • Proven ability to speak the language of a biotechnology company and break down complex scientific concepts for external audiences
  • Strong performer in a fast-paced, data-dynamic work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, influence and collaborate within cross-functional teams and work diplomatically with others
  • Thorough familiarity with all aspects of public company SEC reporting
