New ABFO Member Company Open Job Posting - Associate Director, Tax, Zogenix

The Associate Director of Tax will oversee the execution of our global tax strategy and tax compliance for Zogenix and its subsidiaries. Responsible for ensuring proper tax provision preparation and all financial reporting requirements related to income and other taxes. The position will work closely with our global finance team and internal business partners, as well as our external advisors and consultants to appropriately manage the company’s global tax profile and support the company’s growth plans.


  • Responsible for transfer pricing arrangements, and assisting with intercompany agreements
  • Research and implement tax strategies to maintain a competitive effective tax rate, while ensuring compliance with global tax laws and minimizing risk of audit deficiencies
  • Analyze technical tax issues and identify best practices
  • Effectively manage external service providers preparing various direct and indirect tax returns, including federal/state income tax, sales & use tax, VAT, and international tax
  • Advise senior management on ad hoc issues and inform them of opportunities available to the Company
  • Partner with cross functional teams to ensure all direct and indirect taxes are accounted for correctly
  • Oversee audits and inquiries by governmental authorities
  • Ownership of internal tax controls, and work with SOX team and auditors
  • Develop and review transfer price calculations and entries
  • Research the appropriate positions for the company on VAT issues and customs duties and ensure the accuracy of any filings as applicable. Engage and manage third party specialists to assist as needed.
  • Apply appropriate positions for the company on real and personal property tax issues and ensure the accuracy of any filings as applicable
  • Assist Payroll Manager and Controller in researching equity and payroll tax related issues as they arise
  • Support human resources and legal functions on researching compensation or payroll tax implications of certain employment or contractor relationships
  • Stay knowledgeable on new and developing tax legislations and reach well-reasoned conclusions on technical tax issues and its impact to business.

Core Competencies, Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Strong understanding of federal, state and international corporate income taxation
  • Ability to gather, analyze and interpret information for completeness and accuracy; excellent attention to detail; excellent organizational skills;
  • PC literacy required; MSOffice skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Track record of taking initiative to resolve issues
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and the Sarbanes-Oxley ACT (SOX).
  • Familiarity with EU and other international tax requirements.
  • Experience with IP and supply chain planning in both US and non-US jurisdictions.
  • Knowledge of transfer pricing and intercompany transactions.

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Accounting
  • CPA or JD or Masters in Tax preferred


  • 8+ years of experience in a public accounting firm and/or public company environment - Pharmaceutical industry experience preferred.
