Job Summary:
Based in San Francisco Mission Bay and reporting to the Sr. Director of Accounting Operations, VIR is seeking a Research and Development Accounting Manager to support our growing clinical activities. The individual is responsible for month end accrual of Clinical CRO expenses, as well as accrual of other clinical expenses such as bioanalytical, specialty labs, clinical supplies, and preclinical expenses. The position requires strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills to work multiple stakeholders within the company as well as external vendors.


  • Ensure timely completion of month end activities including monthly clinical trial accruals
  • Perform monthly review and accrual of clinical purchase orders
  • Perform quarterly accrual and reconciliation of collaboration expenses
  • Prepare journal entries and related support documentation that complies with SOX 404(b) requirements
  • Prepare and/or review General ledger account reconciliations
  • Develop strong working relationship with Clinical Team and external vendors, conduct quarterly meetings to ensure proper quarterly accruals
  • Support preparation of financial statement fluctuation analysis by providing explanation of monthly/quarterly fluctuations
  • Support interim and year end (internal and external) audit preparation
  • Continuously identify opportunities for process improvement, including shortening accounting close cycle

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in accounting,
  • 5+ years of experience in finance related roles in biotech, pharmaceutical, or life science industry
  • Experience managing end to end Clinical trial accrual is a must
  • Proficient in standard MS software (Word, Excel and Power Point); Excel power user a plus, Proficiency in NetSuite, BlackLine, and Coupa a plus
  • Experience working in SOX 404(b) control environment is a plus
  • Excellent knowledge of GAAP accounting
