New ABFO Member Company Open Job Posting - Controller, Ardelys, Inc.


Ardelyx is a publicly traded biotech company focused on improving the lives of patients by developing and commercializing first-in-class targeted therapies that advance patient care. Using our discovery model, Ardelyx scientists have characterized new biological mechanisms and pathways that have enabled us to develop a pipeline of drug candidates to manage complications related to kidney and cardiovascular diseases. Our lead candidate, tenapanor, is a first-in-class small molecule therapy for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in adult patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis. If approved, tenapanor could completely change the treatment paradigm in a disease state with significant unmet need.  We are advancing the build of our commercial organization to be prepared for launch of tenapanor in mid-2021.


Due to the growth of the company and preparations for expected commercial activities this year, we are adding a  Controller to lead the Accounting team, reporting to the Vice President of Finance. As a key member of the Finance leadership team, this person will be responsible for all aspects of the accounting close process for this soon-to-be commercial drug manufacturer, leading the accounting, accounts payable, payroll and government price reporting functions. The Controller will partner closely with key stakeholders across the organization and have the opportunity to streamline and optimize processes and systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the Company’s monthly accounting close process for this commercial drug manufacturer. Key processes include but are not limited to: product sales and gross to net deductions; collaboration accounting; production and inventory; clinical trial, manufacturing, and research accruals; equity-based compensation; payroll; accounts payable
  • Ensure that internal controls in the accounting area are appropriately designed, documented, maintained, and operating effectively in accordance with the Sarbanes Oxley Act (“SOX”) and that policies and procedures are adequate and appropriate as the organization continues to grow. Enable best-practice improvements where necessary
  • Oversee the administration and enhancement (including implementation, where applicable) of accounting systems, such as the Company’s enterprise resource planning, procurement, and equity award management applications
  • Lead all pre- and post-launch initiatives with accounting implications, such as establishing adequate reporting relationships with the Company’s third-party logistics provider, and ensure proper product revenue recognition and gross-to-net accounting
  • Function as resident expert for operational and technical accounting matters
  • Oversee compliance with the Company’s investment policy and manage treasury processes to ensure the safeguarding of capital and to manage available liquidity
  • Partner with the Director of SEC Reporting, Technical Accounting and SOX to support the timely, accurate filing of quarterly and annual public filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”)
  • Support the tax compliance function and oversee processes related to VAT filings, sales and use taxes,  property taxes
  • Act as a key point of contact with the Company’s external auditors during quarterly reviews and annual audits
  • Interact with and present to the Company’s Audit and Compliance Committee
  • Establish positive working relationships with non-finance department staff to identify and address all areas with accounting implications
  • Partner and work collaboratively as a trusted advisor of the Chief Financial Officer, the Chief Executive Officer, Senior Management Team, and Vice President Finance on strategic initiatives, including business development, collaborative partnerships, and financing
  • Manage accounting staff and develop and monitor training, performance, and career advancement initiatives


  • A strategic thinker with a minimum of 15 years of experience, including in a similar role within a publicly traded, commercial-stage, growth-oriented biopharmaceutical organization
  • Certified Public Accountant designation required with “Big 4” audit experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in matters of financial reporting, including US GAAP and SEC requirements
  • Ability to take ownership of all areas under responsibility and work proactively to suggest and implement solutions as necessary and considering overall corporate objectives
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a cross-functional, team-oriented environment
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate high-performance teams and focus on key priorities, provide clear direction, appropriate delegate and actively coach/mentor staff
  • Outstanding organizational and written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Goal oriented, with the ability to proactively provide solutions and to ensure that all key department initiatives are carried out in accordance with pre-established deadlines and the Company’s overall strategic plan.
