Position Summary:
We are looking for a talented, experienced and well-rounded Corporate Controller to lead our day-to-day finance and accounting operations, reporting directly to the CFO. The individual will oversee an accomplished and high-performing team of finance professionals interested in supporting a leader who is also dedicated to their professional development and supporting the positive team culture.

The Corporate Controller will oversee the Accounting, Accounting Operations, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) and Tax functions, which include all transactional, technical and cost accounting, financial and SEC reporting, financial planning and analysis, compliance, tax, stock plan administration, financial systems support, and internal controls and SOX 404 compliance. Additionally, the Controller, will be tasked with developing accounting policies and procedures to support commercial operations.

The role also requires interaction with Zosano’s Audit Committee, and the executive team and functional managers. The successful candidate will act as a key business partner with multiple internal constituents by consistently analyzing and presenting financial data and reports in a clear, accurate and timely manner that supports the leadership team in managing operations. This is a hands-on leadership position.


  • Leading the Accounting, Accounting Operations and Financial Planning and Analysis functions 
    •  Accounting
      • Timely completion of GAAP financial statements in accordance with SEC rules
        • Includes revenue recognition for commercial product under ASC 606, gross-to-net reserves and cost accounting
      • Financial information systems enhancements, monitoring and controls
      • Manage annual and quarterly audit process and all SEC filings
      • Support company financings 
      • Manage third-party professionals in the preparation of the tax provision and filing of tax returns
      • Maintain a strong internal control environment and SOX 404 compliance
      • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal and tax reporting
    • Accounting Operations
      • Accounts payable
      • Manage 3PL firm responsible for order-to-cash process
      • Payroll, commissions and related activities
      • Stock administration
      • Insurance
    • Financial Planning & Analysis
      • Annual business planning process, including scenario planning, long-range plans and budgets
      • Detailed, effective and timely analyses of budgets and long-range forecasts
      • Business partnership with Executive Committee and other key management
      • Business modeling for anticipated transactions and financings
      • Cash forecasting and planning
  • Preparing materials for the Board of Directors, Audit Committee and Compensation Committee
  • Participating in Audit Committee meetings
  • Managing Disclosure Committee
  • Maintaining policies and procedures
  • Ensuring that the company’s insurance requirements are adequate to meet the current and forecasted growth of the company
  • Coaching, mentoring and developing the careers of the Finance team employees


  • Minimum of a BA/BS degree; CPA or equivalent required; MBA preferred
  • Big Four accounting experience preferred
  • 15+ years of progressive growth in financial roles in biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies
  • Leadership experience in a publicly traded company required; SOX 404(b) and commercial-stage company experience a plus
  • Thorough knowledge of SEC rules and regulations, procedures and practices
  • Strong demonstrated business acumen and accounting/finance knowledge
  • Financial planning and analysis experience including management of annual and long-range budget processes and forecasts
  • A proven track record of process improvement and experience with financial systems and process change initiatives
  • Experience reviewing and assessing contracts for business impact and accounting treatment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly visible and dynamic environment in a hands-on manner; able to work effectively with ambiguity and incomplete information
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills; ability to interface and communicate effectively with executive management and other functions within the organization
  • Excellent judgment, critical-thinking skills and the ability to see problems and develop solutions to support business decision-making
  • Mindset and ability to drive continuous improvement of financial operations, reporting, risk management and strategic planning
  • Proven experience building teams, resolving conflicts in a collaborative manner and serving as a mentor and coach to employees
