New ABFO Open Job Posting, Sr. Financial Analyst, NGM Biopharmaceuticals

The most advanced drug candidate, NGM282, is entering Phase 2b clinical studies in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).  NGM’s strategic collaboration with Merck, which was extended to March 2022, will continue to provide us with the resources and flexibility to pursue our ambitious R&D goals and further extend our pipeline of novel drug candidates.  

We are seeking a Senior Financial Analyst to support our lead program, aldafermin.  This position will be the finance liaison to the aldafermin project team supporting all financial aspects related to reporting results, budgeting/forecasting, modeling and providing analytical and operational support.  A key part of the role will include supporting the clinical operations team to track progress on trials and to support the month-end accrual process.  The ideal candidate is someone with an understanding of the drug development cycle and has had experience interacting across multiple functions including accounting, project teams and clinical operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish the processes and data required to accurately monitor and report on program spend, key metrics, clinical accruals and budgeted vs. actual results
  • Provide monthly/quarterly budget vs. actual reporting including analysis of key drivers of variances and conduct financial reviews
  • Provide budgeting and forecasting support
  • Interact with clinical operations and aldafermin project team to understand status of clinical
    trials and tracking of study budgets
  • Support the monthly clinical accrual process by:
    • Working closely with clinical operations and contracts teams to ensure that contracts and change orders are appropriately captured in the clinical trial models and accounting implications assessed
    • Preparing monthly expense trackers and review/track invoices against POs and projected spend
    • Reviewing purchase order requests to determine whether they are within budget
    • Coordinate and lead monthly meetings with external CROs and clinical team members to obtain validation of % of completion and units completed
    • Implementing and maintaining Excel models to track clinical trial accruals including identifying process improvement as well as preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and providing audit support
  • Build and maintain effective partnerships with clinical operations, project management and project team members as well as other functional teams to troubleshoot finance-related issues and provide financial support
  • Perform other duties and ad-hoc projects as assigned or required

Core Competencies, Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5+ years of total corporate finance and/or accounting experience (experience in biotech or pharma industry preferred)
  • Experience in budgeting and forecasting, FP&A,  general ledger, and modeling
  • Previous experience supporting clinical development and clinical operations
  • Knowledge of U.S. GAAP and experience with clinical accruals
  • Demonstrated strong critical thinking and analytical skills with the ability to synthesize  information from multiple sources
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work in the details but also assess “the bigger picture” and provide key takeaways and conclusions
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to meet tight deadlines with ability to multitask and provide high quality of work
  • Self-starter, independent thinker with ability to operate independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with multiple functional areas in a collaborative, team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with Netsuite and Quickbooks
  • Proficiency in MS excel and PowerPoint
