New ABFO Open Job Posting -Associate Director, Accounting, Portola Pharmaceuticals

Position Summary:

The Associate Director, Accounting will be responsible for managing and overseeing the general accounting functions and global consolidation.  This position will provide day-to-day management of the close and play a critical role in developing and formalizing operating processes and procedures. This position will have multiple direct reports and work closely with, FP&A, internal and external auditors. This position reports directly to the Assistant Controller.   

Primary responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for leading the accounting department with emphasis on maintaining effective internal controls and documenting policies and procedures.
  • Oversees General Accounting, Consolidation, Fixed Assets and research and development and SG&A accruals.
  • Helps lead the monthly, quarterly and annual financial close, reporting and audits and ensures that they are conducted in accordance with deadlines. Serves as lead liaison with global accounting colleagues and external audit firms.  Reviews journal entries, accruals, analysis and reconciliations.
  • Key liaison with external consultants and audit firms.
  • Develops and maintains the Company’s accounting policies and procedures in accordance with applicable rules and regulations and ensures adherence to accounting policies and procedures.
  • Researches, determines and documents the accounting implications of transactions or changes in business and provides accounting and business expertise to project teams.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Accounting team as well as direction in cross-functional initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to increase efficiencies and improve processes.
  • Participate on projects as required.


  • B.S. degree in Accounting;
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant accounting experience, including at least 3 years in Public Accounting strongly preferred
  • Experience in life science (biotechnology, pharmaceutical, CRO) a plus
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to anticipate events, prioritize assignments, deal with interruptions, and meet deadlines in a fast paced and growth-oriented environment
  • Strong ability to work both independently and part of a team in a detail oriented and organized approach to complete tasks
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge/working experience with Oracle a plus
  • Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Excel
