New ABFO Open Job Posting - Senior Financial Analyst - Portola Pharmaceuticals
 

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of FP&A, the Senior Financial Analyst will work closely with department heads, Finance leadership and Human Resources to drive enterprise level planning including financial planning, headcount and strategic planning. As a member of our FP&A team, you will help us in our objective to provide the optimal mix of analysis, process, financial control and business partnering within the company. 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform financial planning and analysis activities for R&D departments
  • Lead the budgeting / forecasting process for assigned functional areas and departments
  • Prepare monthly budget vs. actual reports and variance explanations for commercial teams and department heads
  • Continuously track cost performance and provide updates to team leaders on current financial and productivity performance
  • Participate in regular cross-departmental meetings to understand the current status of multiple clinical studies and manufacturing activities
  • Partner with department leads and HR to track and maintain forecasted headcount
  • Prepare monthly management and quarterly Board of Director reports
  • Act as key participant and liaison between Finance and various R&D departments (i.e., Clinical Operations, Biology, Chemistry, Biostats, Technical Operations, etc.)
  • Partner in monthly accounting activities (i.e. assist accounting with accrual process, track invoices from major vendors, confirm project, department and account coding, etc.)
  • Assist with COGS and gross margin activities (i.e. Update COGS models with key cost drivers, assist in monthly review process, provide variance analysis)
  • Prepare and provide relevant reports and analysis to support external audits
  • Strategic analysis such as scenario planning, long term forecasts and cost/benefit analysis
  • Ad Hoc projects or tasks as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or equivalent experience; CPA or MBA strongly preferred
  • 6+ years of relevant experience, which includes 3+ years in financial planning and analysis and/or accounting
  • Life science (pharmaceutical, biotech or CRO) experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP (including accruals, account reconciliations and capitalization vs expense)
  • Strong finance skills, analytical ability, and solid business acumen
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and handle simultaneous assignments under tight deadlines and in a fast paced environment
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Word are required
  • Familiarity with ERP systems (Oracle), Financial Planning tools (Adaptive Insights) and other financial systems preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across organizations and utilize resources effectively
