New ABFO Open Job Posting - Director, Commercial FP&A, Portola Pharmaceuticals

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Sr. Director of FP&A, the Director of Commercial FP&A will oversee the full Commercial P&L and be the lead business partner for Sales, Marketing, Market Access and Commercial Operations. This role will partner with these teams to analyze budget requests and tradeoffs to optimize value to the organization. Success in this role will require the ability to cultivate an effective business partnership between the Commercial functional areas, Finance and the Executive Committee. As a member of our FP&A team, you will help us in our objective to provide the optimal mix of analysis, process, financial control and business partnering within the company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the financial planning and forecasting function in support of the Commercial organization
  • Coordinate and consolidate both the long rang plan and annual operating budgets for the US & EU Commercial organization
  • Develop executive summary presentations and monthly management reporting and analysis packages to support strategic decisions
  • Work closely with department heads, Finance leadership and Human Resources to drive enterprise level financial, headcount and strategic planning
  • Partner closely with Accounting on the month-end and quarter-end close processes to record proper accounting adjustments on revenue, gross-to-net (rebates/discount) and operating expenses
  • Maintain and improve financial models/reports that track and analyze functional costs and their impact on the company’s overall performance
  • Work closely with Commercial to understand commercial strategy and key financial metrics and collaborate with accounting to identify potential financial impacts to ensure financial data is properly recorded
  • Identify risks and opportunities that drive financial results and effectively communicate to Finance and Commercial leadership
  • Drive reporting, forecasting and process improvements, including developing dashboards and reports for trending and analysis of specific business objectives and processes
  • Ad Hoc projects or tasks as assigned by manager

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or Business, CPA or MBA strongly preferred
  • 10 – 15 years of experience in financial planning and analysis and/or accounting supporting commercial organizations
  • Life science (pharmaceutical, biotech or CRO) experience required
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP (including accruals, gross-to-net and capitalization vs expense)
  • Must possess strong finance skills, analytical ability, and solid business acumen
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and handle simultaneous assignments under tight deadlines and in a fast paced environment
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Word are required
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across organizations and utilize resources effectively
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
