Tom Mantione

Tom currently serves as a Professional Practice, Audit resident based in Tysons, VA where he is part of a team that actively provides guidance, training and enablement to Assurance personnel across the Americas. Since joining Professional Practice in 2017, Tom focuses upon the implementation of PCAOB AS 3101, The Auditor’s Report on an Audit of Financial Statements When the Auditor Expresses an Unqualified Opinion by developing a regional coaching and monitoring program as well as guidance, training and enablement to facilitate the adoption of Critical Audit Matters (CAM) reporting in 2019. Tom developed example risk-control and flow chart materials for the post-adoption of ASC 606, Revenue from contracts with customers as well as case study learning materials related to exercising professional skepticism and applying a questioning mindset under PCAOB and AICPA audit standards. Tom also supported the monitoring of the PCAOB standard setting and research agendas by developing the Firm’s written comments on proposed auditing standards and providing input to PCAOB staff regarding research agenda inquiries posed to the Firm.    

Prior to his residency, Tom served the Assurance practice in San Diego, CA where he focused primarily on investor-backed, high-growth private and public companies.  He has extensive experience with technical accounting matters and private and public financing transactions including IPOs, secondary offerings and debt / equity transactions.    

Tom has over 12 years of experience working in the life sciences industry serving various biotechnology, pharmaceutical and laboratory service companies along with contract manufacturers and medical device entities.  His life science experience includes pharmaceutical product commercialization, insurance and government reimbursement in diagnostic laboratory environments, contract manufacturing, gross to net revenue recognition, business combinations / business divestitures, asset acquisitions, multiple element revenue arrangements, and milestone revenue recognition. 

He has served a mix of public and private clients including Quidel, Otonomy, Zogenix, Halozyme Therapeutics, Sequenom, Genoptix, Prometheus Laboratories, Epic Sciences, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Santarus, SkinMedica, aTyr Pharma, ViaCyte, and Vical.

Tom has conducted audit quality reviews of EY audit teams based on his extensive client base and transactional experience.

Outside of core responsibilities, Tom served as the EY San Diego Community Engagement Champion and EY Connect Day Coordinator (2010 – 2016) and was actively engaged in on-campus recruiting in San Diego, CA.

Tom is a graduate of the University of San Diego with a Bachelor of Accountancy. He is a CPA in Virginia and California and a member of the AICPA, the Virginia Society of CPAs and California Society of CPAs.
